"Many stories behind successful images involve photographers who, with lots of hard work and perseverance, put themselves in the position to be lucky," says Ellen Woods. "I wish this image exemplified this notion." Instead, it was a moment of happenstance: Woods was trying to shoot a fast-moving beetle, and when she gave up, frustrated, she noticed this cicada covered in ants. Her stark shot—which includes a piece of white plexiglass slipped beneath the subject—is a finalist in this year’s Art of Nature category
